On behalf of the Committee, it gives me great pleasure to let you know that Jimmy Yates has been appointed MURFC Club Captain for the 2018 season.

Jimmy first played rugby when a student at Melbourne Grammar before moving to Geelong Grammar in 2007 where he played in the 1st XV in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 he was selected as captain of the Geelong Grammar 1st XV in addition to winning the Best and Fairest award in the same year; this was a significant season for Jimmy and one where is leadership ability started to become apparent. After leaving school Jimmy had the opportunity to play rugby in British Columbia with the Cowichan Rugby Club. Upon his return to Australia, Jimmy joined MURFC and played in our Colts team in 2010 and 2011. Jimmy’s leadership capability was again on display and he was named captain of that Colts team. From 2012 to today Jimmy has been a regular fixture in our 1st Grade team. Jimmy’s leadership skills, his values and his commitment to the club made this an obvious appointment.

Jimmy takes over from Magnus Gillberg who has made an outstanding contribution over recent years. The role of Club Captain is not merely symbolic, it is perhaps the most important leadership position within our club. The Club Captain also takes on a role on the Committee and most importantly models the club’s values of:
