Tom Sweeney Sr, who played one test match for the Wallabies in 1953 and former MURFC coach, has passed away.

Sweeney was one of two fullbacks taken on the 30-man, 28-match, four-month tour to South Africa in 1953, captained by John Solomon. He played in 14 of the matches, including one Test. He was the leading points-scorer for the tour with 69 points.

Tom was also a serious athlete and held the Queensland High Jump title in the period 1947-1952. He competed in the Olympic trials in 1952.

Tom was in his late 80’s when he passed away.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, 1 March at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 10 Whitehorse Rd, Deepdene.
